5 Best Ubuntu Software

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

Before I start my topic, I have to apologize on behalf of Techcube for not being able to offer any news for the past few days. We were a little bit busy in real life matters, leaving us no spare time to write anything.

As an user of Ubuntu for a few weeks, I have discovered a few softwares that I really find useful. They are: Ubuntu Tweaks, Amarok, Bluefish Editor, Avant Windows Navigator, and last but not least, the Emerald theme manager

Ubuntu Tweaks

It allows you to change or enable settings, or even download some most commonly-used softwares for you. If you just installed Ubuntu and wanted to make it into shape in a short amount of them, try Ubuntu Tweaks!

Download it here: http://ubuntu-tweak.com/downloads

Amarok

Amarok is a KDE Music player that also has a library built into it, and allow people to organize it easily as well. While playing, it automatically searches for lyrics, artist information or even track information. Other than that, it has a realy nice interface compared to others.

Amarok 2 Beta is already out, and it will have a much nicer interface. For more information on that, visit http://amarok.kde.org/

To download, run sudo apt-get install amarok or search for amarok in Synaptic

Bluefish Editor

Looking for a coding helper on Ubuntu? After trying its alternatives, I found Bluefish the best. It has a really neat interface and a lot of featrues that you would expect to see in some paid editors in Windows. Syntax Highlighting supports a lot of programming languages including PHP, HTML, perl, ruby, etc.

To download, run sudo apt-get install bluefish or search for bluefish in Synaptic

Avant Window Manager

Jealous at those Mac users that always show off their dock? Not anymore with this AWN. It is a fully functional dock that allow you to see which windows are currently opened, add applets, and also launchers. It has some awesome themes + 3D look available as well!

To download, run sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator or search for avant-window-navigator in Synaptic. After you install, you will need to add “avant-window-navigator” in Preference -> Sessions if you want it to start automatically when you boot/login.

Emerald Theme Manager

Ooh, this is the huge hit on Ubuntu. It is manager that works well with Compiz Fusion that makes youor windows look pretty. It even has some Windows Vista-like themes/engines preinstalled. With themes that are available on Gnome-look.org, I am sure you can find the fun on customizing your desktop

To download, run sudo apt-get install emerald or search for emerald in Synaptic. After you install, you will need to add “emerald –replace” in Preferences -> Sessions if you want it to start automatically when you boot/login.

Conclusion

These are my top five picks for softwares on Ubuntu… oh crap, almost forgot the greatest game existed ever — Grid Wars. You are not going to realize how powerful this game is without trying it.

Have fun messing around with these software, and as usual, if you have any questions at all, feel free to post!
