There’s Wi-Fi everywhere!
Friday, November 7th, 2008 by Peter Zhang“Dude, that’s some old news.” No, not for China. I am in the Shanghai International Airport Terminal 2 right now, and am surfing on the internet via free wi-fi.
“Wi-Fi” was something introduced to China just a few years ago. There might me Wi-Fi everywhere in countries such as America, Canada, but not China.
This summer, I was at KunMing, YunNan, China. It is a developing city at southwestern China, and there is only one (1) Wi-Fi HotSpot there. Nope, it is not in an Airport, but in a coffee shop opened by an American.
Cellphones that equip with Wi-Fi in other countries (such as Nokia N81, N95, etc.) has their Wi-Fi module took away, or disabled. That’s a very strange law, but that’s the way it works, don’t ask me why. If you want to buy a cellphone in China with Wi-Fi, you have to buy those that are imported directly from foreign countries (the so-called “water goods”)
The government is starting to set up hotspots all around the cities right now. In Beijng, there are hotspots inside “2Huan”, which is the city center area. In Shanghai, you can sometimes see “Free Public Wi-Fi” Networks as well.
It is just so good to see there is Wi-Fi available for the public. Let’s hope this growth continues and never stops =)

In Singapore, we have hotspots almost everywhere! Cafes, shopping centers, airports, hotels, fast food, even the streets. All these are under Wireless@SG network, which plans to make wireless accessible in any part of Singapore!

Yeah, there are Hotspots all around in Hong Kong as well, but considering China is still a developing country, this is pretty nice =)

Half the hotspots here in bejing don’t work with my HTC P4350, which is a shame since i don’t want to pay for EDGE here…

I don’t have a phone that supports EDGE or 3G or any other networks, but even if I do, I wouldn’t want to pay for them as well. Why do you want to pay for something slower than a free service?

Great article on Singapore!
By the way, before I went there 6 days ago I used a free online hotel search engine which gave me quite cheap rates for the Royal Plaza On Scotts Hotel.
If you’re interested give it a try over at http://tinyurl.com/Singapore-Hotelz
They’ve got all major hotel groups listed there and I personally couldn’t find any cheaper rates on the internet.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
