Does Google Calendar really make things easier?

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 by Peter Zhang

The answer is yes! I had a chance to mess with Google Calendar while organizing events for a student club. After spending some time with it, I find that it is actually a really good organizer for events and such.

So how can it help you? Follow me!

Signing in

First Step: Open Google Calendar. Sign in with your Google Account (If you don’t have one already, sign up one. If you don’t feel like signing up one, let me persuade you).

Create an Event

Then, try creating an event by simply clicking in one of days in the month. Type in the event name, or even describe it  (such as 12:30pm Meeting), and look what happens!

It is that simple! You can even select multiple boxes in a row, and create an event that takes you a few days to finish. Such as, travelling to China, or, Project Century or something.

Repetitive Events

Choose an event, click “edit settings”. Through that,You can also set if the event repeats or not. Such as a company meeting at every Tuesday morning, that can be easily handled with Google Calendar.

Probably the best thing you can do is inviting guests to your events. And if the guests use Google Calendar, it would be shown on their calendar too. Inviting guests is simple, all you need to do is click into “edit settings”, and choose a list of guests from your contacts of GMail (or enter a email address manually).

After you click “save”, Google Calendar will automatically send out a mail to those you specified. The letter itself is pretty too. Guests will have an option to say “Yes” “Maybe” or “No” to the “Going?” question. A complete guest list with who is attending and who not can be viewed in the details of the event.

Public Calendar

There are no “Holidays” listed on Calendar? WHAT TO DO!? A simple and fast solution: Import a public calendar. Go to Settings –> Calendars –>Browse Public Calendars and include calendars that fits you the best. It includes holidays from a ton of countries.

Display it!

When you have made a calendar, you want to show everybody how neat you are. Simply Go into Settings –> Calendars. Choose your calendar and follow the instructions to “Embed the Calendar”. There are tonnes of options you can make, including size, what to show and what not to show, etc.

Still confused? Not sure if Google Calendar can really does what it says? Try it out first!
