Google Music – offering free legal music to Chinese Internet Users

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

If the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of China is “fake”, “illegal” and those related terms, think again. Google Music was just opened and offered more than a million free, legal songs to Chinese Internet users.

Google Music Homepage

Google is facing a really strong local competitor, Baidu, and Baidu’s special MP3 services especially gave Baidu more than 70% of market share of searching in China. Wanted to take some of its lost market shares back, Google partnered with top100.cn to produce a free platform for everybody.

Most of the songs are 192Kbps… pretty high quality. Some of the English songs, however, I found are really low quality though.

However, note that this music is for China Mainland users only. For those who have a foreign IP, you will see a 403 Forbidden message whenever you try to listen/download songs.

WTFPL? The Super Free Software License

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

I have recently discovered the possibly most-free, permissive software license terms online ever, namely the WTFPL, or in full name, Do What The F You Want To Public License. Oh, on a second note, it is actually GPL Compatitable!

The Full License Terms itself is extremely simple, and is comprised of only one term:

DO WHAT THE F*** YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE
Version 2, December 2004

Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar
14 rue de Plaisance, 75014 Paris, France
Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified
copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long
as the name is changed.

DO WHAT THE F*** YOU WANT TO PUBLIC LICENSE
TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COPYING, DISTRIBUTION AND MODIFICATION

0. You just DO WHAT THE F*** YOU WANT TO.

Don’t ask any questions while you apply this license. Everything is free, and as they describe in FAQ, you can do just whatever you want.

By the way, with the WTFPL, can I also…
Oh but yes, of course you can.

But can I…
Yes you can.

Can…
Yes!

See the powerfulness of WTFPL! Actually, I am thinking of starting to put all my future works into WTFPL now. :P

Youtube blocked in China, AGAIN?

Thursday, March 5th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

Shocking news, once again. Youtube service begins to become unstable yesterday, and as of this morning (GMT+8), it is totally unaccessible. Tonnes of users complain online about this. Foreigners in China have been trying different ways waiting for it to be restored as soon as possible. (How many people are complaining?) Meanwhile, if you really want to visit Youtube, you can try something like Tor or Freegate.

Seriously, aren’t there better ways to censor anti-tibet media other than blocking YouTube?

Wow! (almost) Automatic name tagging in Picasa Web Album!

Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

image

As I arrange my photos on Picasa Web, I found out about Picasa’s new feature to auto-tag people. Picasa automatically finds all the faces in the pictures, group them together and asks me who are they. I can choose from a list of Email contacts, or add new ones. I am really impressed, Google!

To use this feature, upload your pictures to Picasa Web Album, and click “Add Name Tag” on the right. Make sure you enabled this feature in the Settings page!

This site may harm your computer?!

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 by Jonathan Lau

Earlier on, I was browsing the internet as per normal when Google started flagging what it seems like all websites as malicious sites that might harm your computer. Its really uncommon to see Google making such a mistake on their search engine.

Anyway, here’s a comic published by JoyOfTech:

Wordpress.tv – “The Visual Resource”

Monday, January 19th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

This little link right here drew my attention, and that video drew my interest to Wordpress.tv.

That little video basically explained everything on Wordpress.tv. Wordpress.tv, in a nutshell, is a bunch of video tutorials/resources put together in an awesome site. The resources on there has everything from beginning level, such as Writing and Publishing a Post, to a somewhat expert level, such as Prevent, Detect and Stop Content Theft

Good job on that, Wordpress team!

(P.S., We apologize for not being able to get any articles for the last two days. School was terribly busy for us…)

AutoMOD for phpBB3!

Saturday, January 10th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

The phpBB team has just released its tool – AutoMOD to help users to install MODs easily. With this, I can almost say that phpBB 3 has no cons to install now!

I have yet to test this tool, since I just found out about it recently. But once I do, I will surely report about it

For more information, visit: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1370895

Also, on a sidenote, Support for phpBB2 has already ended. All users should be upgarded to phpBB3 by now.
