There’s Wi-Fi everywhere!

Friday, November 7th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

“Dude, that’s some old news.” No, not for China. I am in the Shanghai International Airport Terminal 2 right now, and am surfing on the internet via free wi-fi.

“Wi-Fi” was something introduced to China just a few years ago. There might me Wi-Fi everywhere in countries such as America, Canada, but not China.

This summer, I was at KunMing, YunNan, China. It is a developing city at southwestern China, and there is only one (1) Wi-Fi HotSpot there. Nope, it is not in an Airport, but in a coffee shop opened by an American.

Cellphones that equip with Wi-Fi in other countries (such as Nokia N81, N95, etc.) has their Wi-Fi module took away, or disabled. That’s a very strange law, but that’s the way it works, don’t ask me why. If you want to buy a cellphone in China with Wi-Fi, you have to buy those that are imported directly from foreign countries (the so-called “water goods”)

The government is starting to set up hotspots all around the cities right now. In Beijng, there are hotspots inside “2Huan”, which is the city center area. In Shanghai, you can sometimes see “Free Public Wi-Fi” Networks as well.

It is just so good to see there is Wi-Fi available for the public. Let’s hope this growth continues and never stops =)
