Two new themes: Surreal and Dark Autumn

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

You may have probably noticed that there is a new page – Surreal. Yup, it is a new theme of mine, with a colorful background, some blue accent, and [insert advertisements here]. Also, a new version of Dark Autumn has also been released. Compared to the last version, we have added a colorpicker this time for users to choose their own colors.

Both of these themes are now in the WP Themes Directory. How cool is that, you ask? Well, in WP 2.8, you can now search for “surreal” or “dark autumn” and install it directly from your admin panel. No FTP required.

Enjoy these themes, and check back regularly for more cool updates!

Wordpress 2.8 Beta 1 is out!

Monday, May 18th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

Wow! Truly an unexpected release! I woke up this morning and found a link linking to a blog post in Wordpress.org blog saying that WP2.8 Beta 1 is realeased. Unlike WP 2.7 release, there are no polls this time, but completely based on the suggestions made in forum, IRC and Trac. Seems like a great improvement, keep the good work up!

Setting up a Wordpress Test Site

Example Site

If you’re a Wordpress plugin or theme developer like we are, there might be times when you wanted to have a live demo or showcase on the cool stuff your plugin can do. However, most plugins are only configurable by administrators of the blog, and giving out admin permission on your Wordpress blog can be disastrous. Want to let your users have full admin access without compromising security? This post briefly runs through a few quick steps to get you started!

Displaying the comment count for a specific post in Wordpress

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

Phew, that was a long title. Anyway, to say it short, this trick helps you to display the count of the comment, such as “comment 1, comment 2, etc.”

I was trying to implement that in the new Dark Autumn theme, but my search did not return any helpful results. So I tried to do it myself, and I did it!

Wordpress.tv – “The Visual Resource”

Monday, January 19th, 2009 by Peter Zhang

This little link right here drew my attention, and that video drew my interest to Wordpress.tv.

That little video basically explained everything on Wordpress.tv. Wordpress.tv, in a nutshell, is a bunch of video tutorials/resources put together in an awesome site. The resources on there has everything from beginning level, such as Writing and Publishing a Post, to a somewhat expert level, such as Prevent, Detect and Stop Content Theft

Good job on that, Wordpress team!

(P.S., We apologize for not being able to get any articles for the last two days. School was terribly busy for us…)

Let’s talk about the cons of this WP2.7 upgrade… Themes!

Thursday, December 25th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

Recently, I have been trying to upgrade my Wordpress themes to be WP2.7 compatitable, but found it extremely annoying, frustrating and hard to do so. (Perhaps I need to work on my programming skills?)

WP2.7 introduces the completely new comment loop, and tonnes of new features, such as nested posts, different styles for author replies, etc. This has (at last in my opinion) given theme authors a huge headache. The list of changes is HUGE, and it is located here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Migrating_Plugins_and_Themes_to_2.7

Anyway, I need to work on my theme now. Give me some time to figure this thing out, and I shall be able to help you guys =)

I told you WP 2.7 is going to be out in no time!

Thursday, December 11th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

The Wordprses team has just released the final version of Wordpress 2.7! While I think it is more of a WP 3.0, but they said they didn’t want to skip version codes. Oh well, as long as it is improved, it’s fine with me =P.

TechCube will be upgrading to Wordpress 2.7 today, and give you a full review by tomorrow. We are sorry about the inconvieniences caused.

To read more about and download Wordpress 2.7, check out this link: http://wordpress.org/development/2008/12/coltrane/

Kudos to the Wordpress team!

Wordpress 2.7 RC2 is out!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

Wow, let’s congratulate the Wordpress team for releasing the RC2 version of Wordpress 2.7. They are one big step closer than the final version of it!

Basically an RC means if there are no bugs or only little bugs found, the next release will be Final. Matt’s words clearly stated that “We feel this release is pretty much exactly what we’re going to ship as 2.7, barring any final bugs or polish tweaks that you report or we find.” So, I say there will be only one more week. What do you think?

Extra: Wordpress 2.6.5 Released

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 by Peter Zhang

This was a funny release. Ryan, the developer said that they skipped 2.6.4 in order to avoid the confusion with the fake version. Heh, let’s see how the people that released the fake version would react.

Anyway, this release, they fixed a security issues and three small fix. TechCube already updated, have you?

Visit this post for more on 2.6.5: http://wordpress.org/development/2008/11/wordpress-265/
